The quick answer

Choose the complete domain, check its current availability with a registrar, review the registration and renewal costs, and enter the correct registrant details. Keep the order reference and wait for confirmed registration before treating the name as yours. A shortlist or payment alone does not confirm registration.

Before you begin

  • A shortlist of complete addresses, including the extension.
  • The person or organisation that should hold the registration.
  • Accurate owner contact details and an email account you can already access.
  • A budget that includes the regular renewal price and any separate website or email service.

1. Choose the whole address

Say the name aloud, type it without looking and consider how it will appear in an email address. These are practical NameUK checks: a short, memorable address is often easier to share than a long string of extra words or hyphens.

Compare .co.uk with .uk for a UK audience. .org.uk is intended for not-for-profit entities; .me.uk is intended for an individual. Registering one ending does not register the matching names under other endings. Check the current rules for the extension you choose.

NameUK's initial catalogue excludes .ie and restricted UK namespaces. Standard registration can still involve contact checks. An available address is not proof that you have rights to someone else's name or brand; investigate any conflict before proceeding.

2. Check availability without guessing

Use the registrar's current availability result for the exact address. Nominet identifies live registry checks as the primary method for its Dragon integrations and says RDAP is not an availability service. A blank website, a failed DNS lookup or no search-engine result does not establish that a name can be registered.

A search result can change before registration completes. A shortlist is useful for comparison but does not reserve the name. In NameUK search, an unknown result means availability has not been confirmed, rather than that the domain is free to register.

What a domain search result tells you
ResultNext step
AvailableReview the exact name, price and requirements; wait for registration confirmation.
UnavailableTry a different name or ending. Do not assume an empty website means it is for sale.
Unknown or check failedRetry or ask the registrar. Do not treat missing information as availability.
Premium or restrictedCheck the specific price and eligibility. NameUK's standard checkout excludes these names.

3. Compare the first year with the ongoing cost

Write down the registration term, first-year total, renewal price before paying. The following is a NameUK comparison worksheet, not a quoted price or promise that a particular service is included.

Your domain cost checklist
Cost or serviceQuestion to answer before purchase
RegistrationWhat is the total for the exact name and registration term?
RenewalWhat is the regular price after any introductory offer?
Website hostingWhere will the website run, and is that a separate subscription?
EmailDoes the service include a mailbox, or just DNS controls for another email provider?
Transfers and recoveryWhich fees or eligibility rules could apply later?

4. Register to the right owner

The registrant is the person or organisation holding the registration. An account login, billing contact and registrant can have different roles. Agree who should hold a business or organisation's domain before someone purchases it on their behalf.

Use accurate details and a contact email you can access before the new domain works. In NameUK's prepared checkout, individual and company fields follow the selected registrant type. Review the spelling, legal owner, address, country and telephone number before confirming the order.

Follow the registrar or registry's verification instructions and keep contact details current. ICANN's accuracy obligations apply to global domains such as .com and .net; UK domains have Nominet's own rules. Do not assume every extension shares the same verification deadline or process.

5. Follow the order through to registration

Keep the order reference and return to the registrar's order screen after payment. A payment confirmation and a registration confirmation answer different questions. Some orders need further checks or registry processing before the domain appears in your account.

NameUK's prepared order journey shows individual domain outcomes, including pending registration and review. If a response is missing or a status remains uncertain, refresh the original order and contact support with its reference. Avoid starting another order for the same address merely because the first response did not arrive.

NameUK verifies payment before submitting registration to the registrar. Your signed-in order and dashboard show the confirmed domain and expiry. An explicitly labelled sample dashboard contains fictional names and does not prove registration.

6. Make the first dashboard checks

After the registrar confirms registration, check the domain's exact spelling, owner details, expiry date and renewal deadline. Keep access to the account and contact mailbox. When authenticator protection is available, set it up and store recovery information securely.

Find the current nameservers before changing DNS. Follow your website and email providers' instructions, preserving records for services you already use. Registration does not itself create a website or mailbox, and you can often connect separate providers without moving the domain.

  • Connect the website, then test the address with and without www as your host instructs.
  • Connect email separately and test both sending and receiving.
  • Record the renewal deadline outside the domain account as well.
  • Check any saved payment or renewal permission separately; a preference is not a completed renewal.
