Renew before the registrar’s renewal deadline, which can be earlier than registry expiry. Keep an independent reminder, check your current price and follow the original order until renewal is confirmed. A saved card, reminder email or payment receipt alone does not extend a domain.
Before you begin
- Access to the domain account and its contact mailbox.
- The exact domain, current registrar and saved renewal deadline.
- The regular renewal price, term and applicable fees.
- Any existing renewal order or automatic-billing permission.
1. Find the deadline you need to act on
Start with the registrar that currently manages the domain. A website host, email provider and domain registrar can be different companies. Sign in directly to the account rather than relying on an unexpected payment link in an email.
Openprovider explains that its renewal date can precede the registry’s expiry date. NameUK’s prepared dashboard separates the saved registrar deadline from registry expiry. If either date is missing or inconsistent, ask support to check it before relying on a renewal setting.
| Date | What to check |
|---|---|
| Registrar renewal deadline / Renew by | Complete your chosen renewal route before this date; leave time for payment and registrar processing. |
| Registry expiry | The end of the recorded registration term. It is not necessarily the last date your provider accepts an ordinary renewal. |
| Planned automatic payment | An intended billing date under your permission. Check the resulting order; a planned date is not a completed payment or renewal. |
2. Check the regular price and the renewal term
Compare the renewal total with the ongoing price you expected, rather than the introductory registration offer. Check the exact domain and extension, how long the renewal lasts and any extra recovery or premium charges.
NameUK’s one-time checkout reviews a one-year renewal for the selected domain. Any automatic-renewal permission, where offered, requires a separate price and term review. A different registrar may offer different periods. A registry’s maximum term does not mean every retailer offers that term.
Website hosting, mailboxes and the domain registration can have separate bills and expiry dates. Keep them separately in your budget. NameUK shows registration and annual renewal prices separately; your new renewal quote confirms the current amount before payment.
3. Separate reminders, saved cards and permission
An email reminder asks you to act. Saving a payment card prepares a possible payment method. Automatic renewal permission authorises a defined future billing flow. None of these, by itself, confirms a renewed registration.
In NameUK’s prepared dashboard, open the domain and use Renewal for one-time checkout, Automatic renewal for the separate fixed-price permission, and Reminders for optional email preferences. Saving a card leaves permission off until you review and confirm it. Read the current permission and any recent cycles before changing settings.
| Control | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|
| Optional reminder preference | It does not take payment, extend the domain or activate a closed email service. |
| Saved card | It does not enable automatic permission for every domain or confirm a charge. |
| Automatic renewal permission | It does not guarantee successful payment or registrar completion. |
| One-time renewal checkout | It covers the selected renewal, without automatically granting future billing permission. |
4. Keep a reminder outside the domain account
Use a contact mailbox you can still access if the domain’s own email stops working. Check where messages go and keep your contact details current in the registrar’s account. Choose a calendar reminder early enough to review the price, account access and payment method before the deadline.
The Renewal panel can download a calendar file for a recorded, current deadline. Import it into your own calendar and choose earlier notifications there. The file is a snapshot: update or remove the event if the date changes, the domain moves or you decide not to renew it. A sample export contains a fictional date.
ICANN describes required registrar reminders for global domains such as .com and .net. Those notices are separate from NameUK’s optional reminders; do not apply the same policy automatically to .uk domains. An email service accepting a message does not prove it reached your inbox.

5. Follow the original order through to confirmation
Keep the renewal order reference and return to Orders & billing after payment. NameUK’s prepared order screen separates payment from registrar confirmation. Check the selected domain’s outcome and the newly confirmed expiry, rather than relying on a bank entry alone.
If a reply is delayed, refresh the original order and contact support with its reference. Avoid opening another checkout for the same domain merely because the first result is uncertain. Support needs to check the original payment and request before deciding the next step.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Payment received or renewal in progress | Follow the same order while registrar confirmation is pending. |
| Renewal complete with confirmed expiry | Record the extended expiry and the next renewal deadline. |
| Payment or renewal needs review | Contact support with the original reference; avoid repeating an uncertain payment or request. |
| Checkout closed or payment unsuccessful | Review the original order and current eligibility before trying again. |
6. If the deadline passes or you move the domain
Contact the current registrar promptly if the deadline or expiry has passed. Ask whether renewal or restoration is still possible, the full cost and the date by which you must act. UK and global extensions have different lifecycle rules; do not assume a universal grace period or guaranteed recovery.
A registrar transfer and a renewal are separate decisions. Check the dates and fees for the exact extension before moving a name near expiry. After the move, verify the receiving registrar, current expiry, new deadline and any billing permission left with the previous provider.
If you turn off NameUK automatic permission, it stops new automatic billing under that permission. It does not reverse an already-started payment or renewal. Check recent cycles and Orders & billing. If you intentionally stop renewing a name, review any website, email and other services that still depend on it.

Extension rules and provider processes can change. Check the current registrar instructions before a registration, transfer or renewal.
