Choose .co.uk if you prefer a familiar UK business address, or .uk if a shorter UK address suits your name. Neither ending includes the other. Compare the complete addresses, availability and ongoing costs before deciding whether you need one or both.
Before you begin
- Write the same name with .co.uk and .uk
- Check each full address separately
- Compare registration terms and annual renewal costs
- Choose the person or organisation that will own and manage the name
The difference between .co.uk and .uk
Both belong to the UK domain family operated by Nominet. A name such as youridea.co.uk sits within co.uk; youridea.uk is registered directly within uk. The shorter ending changes the address, not what a website can contain. Nominet presents .co.uk as a business-oriented option and .uk as an option for businesses and individuals.
Use the comparison below as a starting point. How an address looks and sounds with your particular name matters more than choosing an ending in isolation.
| What to compare | .co.uk | .uk |
|---|---|---|
| Example address | youridea.co.uk | youridea.uk |
| Address style | Familiar UK business naming pattern | Shorter, direct UK ending |
| Typical choice | Businesses that prefer the co.uk format | Businesses or individuals who prefer a concise address |
| The matching ending | Must be checked and registered separately | Must be checked and registered separately |
| Website and email | Require separately configured services | Require separately configured services |
| Ongoing budget | Registration term plus later renewals | Registration term plus later renewals |

Choose the address people can recognise
Write both addresses on a shortlist and say them aloud. Ask someone who has not seen the name to spell it back. Test the complete address on a business card, an email signature and a small phone screen. A concise name with .co.uk may be easier to remember than a complicated name with .uk.
For an established business, consider the address customers already use. A shorter alternative can be useful, but moving a working website also involves redirects, email decisions and updated links. Keep that project separate from simply registering an additional name.
Does .co.uk ownership include the .uk name?
No. Treat the two addresses as separate registrations with separate availability checks and renewal obligations. One may be available while the other belongs to someone else. Owning a matching .co.uk does not make a new .uk registration automatic.
You may encounter old advice about reserved .uk rights. That historical reservation period ended on 25 June 2019. Check the current status of the exact address you want instead of relying on an old reservation notice.
Compare the full registration and renewal budget
Compare the cost for the same registration term, then check the annual renewal amount. A three-year registration pays for the initial three-year term; it does not turn future renewals into a permanent three-year subscription. Read the term and renewal timing in your basket before paying.
If you choose both endings, budget for two registrations and two ongoing renewals. Choose the correct owner for each and keep the account email monitored. Record who is responsible for renewal, especially when an agency or colleague helps with the website.
Will one ending improve your Google ranking?
A UK country-code domain can help signal that a website is aimed at the UK. That does not establish a ranking advantage for .co.uk over .uk. Choose the address for your audience and brand, then build useful content and a website that works well.
Registering the matching ending does not add a second useful website by itself. If both addresses show the same content, decide which is the main address and configure the alternative deliberately rather than leaving two identical sites running.

If you register both, plan the website and email
Choose one primary website address. Ask your website host to configure permanent redirects from the alternative to the relevant pages on the primary site. Both addresses need working HTTPS so that visitors can reach the redirect securely. A DNS record points an address to a service; it is not a page redirect on its own.
Email needs a separate decision. Decide whether you will send and receive mail on one address or both, then obtain the exact mailbox and DNS instructions from your email provider. A website redirect does not forward email, and registering the second domain does not create mailboxes.

Extension rules and provider processes can change. Check the current registrar instructions before a registration, transfer or renewal.
Compare your two UK addresses
Check your preferred name with each ending. A search result or saved basket does not reserve a domain.
