You can register an available domain without buying hosting. NameUK sells domain registration separately, so you can secure a name while you choose a website builder or email provider. Keep the registration renewed even while the name is unused.

Domain, DNS, hosting and email do different jobs
A domain is the address you register. DNS connects that address to services. Web hosting runs or stores a website; an email provider runs your mailboxes. These can be supplied by different companies.

What you can do immediately after registering
Wait for the registration confirmation and check that the domain appears as active in your NameUK account. Review the owner contact details, expiry date and nameservers. Save your account recovery information somewhere you can access without this new domain.
You can leave the name unconnected while preparing your project. Registration alone does not create a homepage or mailbox. Depending on the DNS records, opening an unused domain may show no website; that does not mean the registration failed.
Connect a website when you are ready
Choose a website service that supports your own domain and check which plan includes that connection. Ask it for the exact DNS records or nameservers for your project. An IP address or CNAME target from an unrelated example will not connect your site.
If you keep the existing nameservers, add the required records at the active DNS host. If you change nameservers, prepare the new DNS zone first, including any email records. Check both the root address and www after the change.
Use domain email without building a website
You can choose an email provider before publishing a website. Create the mailboxes with that provider, then follow its instructions for MX and sender-authentication records. A domain registration does not supply an inbox by itself.
Keep an independent recovery address on the registrar account. If every password reset depends on a mailbox using the same domain, an expired domain or broken mail record can make recovery harder. Test sending and receiving before relying on the new address.
Can hosting and the domain stay with different companies?
Yes. You can keep the registration at NameUK and connect a separate hosting service through DNS. A host asking you to connect a domain is not necessarily asking you to transfer its registration.
Before following a setup wizard, check whether it is changing DNS records, replacing nameservers or transferring the registrar. Those are different actions. DNS can be managed in the NameUK dashboard when the domain uses the supported DNS service; after switching to an external DNS host, manage its active records there.
Keep a simple ongoing-cost checklist
Record the domain renewal cost and expiry date separately from website and mailbox subscriptions. Keep owner contact details current and review renewal reminders even if the site is still only an idea.
Before buying a bundle, compare its later renewal amounts and which services you actually need. With a separate registration, the next step can be as small as choosing a name and a registration term. Hosting and email decisions can follow when the project is ready.
