You cannot buy an ordinary .co.uk, .uk or .com registration permanently with one payment. You register the name for a defined period and renew it to keep the registration active. A multi-year purchase pays for a longer initial term; it does not remove future renewal dates. Compare the ongoing renewal price and record the confirmed expiry date after every purchase.

Before you begin
- The exact domain and its confirmed expiry date.
- The current annual renewal price, separate from the registration offer.
- A working account email and secure access to the registrar account.
- A reminder and a budget for the next renewal before the term ends.
What you pay for when you register a name
A domain registration has a start date, a registered holder and an expiry date. The name is assigned under the relevant registry’s rules rather than sold as a permanent physical object. For everyday business planning, think of it as an address you need to keep maintained and renewed.
The domain is also separate from your website files, hosting plan and mailboxes. Cancelling a hosting package does not necessarily cancel its domain registration, and paying for hosting does not prove that a separate domain renewal has been completed. Keep the registration receipt and the domain’s expiry information together.
How long can a UK domain registration last?
Nominet’s registry supports .UK registration and renewal periods measured in years, including multi-year terms up to its permitted limit. The terms offered in a particular registrar’s shop can be narrower than the registry’s technical options. Choose from the periods actually shown for your selected domain at checkout.
NameUK offers one-year registration and an initial three-year offer for .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk. The three-year option has a later renewal date, but it still expires unless renewed. It does not apply automatically to every extension or turn into a perpetual registration.
Compare renewal costs beyond the opening offer
Write down the registration charge, the number of years included and the annual renewal price as three separate details. An attractive opening price can hide a much higher ongoing budget if you only compare the first invoice. Add hosting, email and any website-builder subscription on separate lines.
For a longer plan, calculate the known initial payment and a renewal allowance for later years. Treat future renewal amounts as a budget estimate unless your contract explicitly fixes them. NameUK’s current registration and renewal amounts are shown below and on the pricing page; future renewal prices can change.
| Question | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| How many years does this payment cover? | When you will need to renew again. |
| What is the annual renewal price? | The ongoing cost after the first term. |
| Does the offer cover this extension? | Whether the advertised deal applies to your name. |
| What services cost extra? | Your complete website and email budget. |

Keep control of the account as well as the name
Use a business-controlled account email that someone will still be able to access next year. Keep the contact details current and protect the account with two-factor authentication. Save recovery information privately, and agree who handles renewal if several people work on the website.
Do not assume a saved card means automatic renewal is active. Check the renewal setting and the registrar’s current process for the individual domain. If you renew manually, allow time for payment and registration processing before expiry. A payment receipt alone is not the same evidence as the domain showing the updated expiry date.
What happens if you forget to renew?
A domain can stop working and eventually become available for someone else if the registration lapses. The exact stages, restoration options and deadlines depend on the extension and registrar. Do not use an expired-domain recovery period as an ordinary renewal schedule.
If the date has already passed, sign in to your registrar directly and check the domain status. Follow the relevant recovery route promptly. Messages from strangers claiming to offer urgent renewal may be scams, so compare the sender and the account record before paying. Keep control of the name while you decide whether you still need the associated website.

Can I keep a domain for decades or move it later?
A domain can remain with the same business for many years through repeated successful renewals and compliance with its registration rules. You do not have to buy a different domain every time a website is redesigned. A domain can also point to new hosting without changing the registered name.
Moving to another registrar is a separate process from renewing or moving a website. Check its transfer rules, charges and expiry information before starting. For important business addresses, the best long-term plan combines an affordable renewal price, secure account access and a reliable reminder routine. None of those should be replaced by an unsupported lifetime ownership promise.
