The quick answer

Use a subdomain when a service belongs to your existing brand but needs its own website or platform, such as shop.example.co.uk. Consider a separate domain when it has an independent identity, owner or future. A subdomain normally needs no separate registrar registration, but hosting, email and software charges can still apply.

Before you begin

  • Decide whether customers should see one brand or two independent brands.
  • Check which custom address options the website platform supports.
  • List who will own the domain, manage DNS and pay for each service.
  • Compare the ongoing renewal cost if you are considering another registered name.

Understand the three address options

In example.co.uk, the registrable name is example.co.uk. The address shop.example.co.uk adds a subdomain to it. The address example.co.uk/shop/ uses a path inside the website. These look similar to a visitor, but they give your website platform different jobs.

A path is usually managed inside the existing website. A subdomain can point to a separate service through DNS. A separate registered domain has its own registration, renewal and DNS setup. Do not buy another name just to create a /shop/ page; first check what your current website can already do.

When a subdomain makes sense

A business might keep its main brochure site at the root and put a customer portal at portal.example.co.uk. A restaurant might connect bookings.example.co.uk to a booking provider. These addresses make the relationship to the main business clear without introducing another name customers must remember.

Before creating the DNS record, add the custom hostname to the destination platform. Use the A, AAAA or CNAME values it supplies and complete its ownership and HTTPS checks. DNS alone cannot tell a hosting platform which customer account should serve the address. Confirm that your subscription permits a custom subdomain.

When a separate domain is worth the extra renewal

A separate name can suit a new brand with different customers, a project that may be sold, or an organisation with a different legal owner. It also lets you give the project a standalone public address. The trade-off is another asset to maintain and another renewal to remember.

Write down the ownership decision before buying. If you register on behalf of a client, use the agreed registrant details and a handover plan. If two brands share one account today, consider whether they may need separate account access later. A memorable address does not remove the need for clear ownership records.

Will a subdomain improve SEO?

Choose the structure because it works for users and your publishing tools, rather than expecting the address alone to create rankings. Google supports site names at domain and subdomain level, but that feature is not a promise that a subdomain receives better positions.

Plan navigation between related sites, avoid publishing the same pages under several competing addresses, and give each useful page a clear purpose. If moving an existing site, plan URL redirects and search reporting. A new address without the old content, links and redirects is a website migration, not a cosmetic DNS edit.

Set up and maintain the chosen address

For a subdomain on NameUK’s managed DNS, open the parent domain’s DNS tab and add the record requested by the service. Enter the subdomain label, such as shop, where the form expects a host. Review the complete address before saving. Keep the parent website and its email entries unchanged unless the provider’s documented setup requires otherwise.

When retiring the service, remove DNS entries that still point to a cancelled third-party resource and remove the custom hostname from that provider. Keep an inventory of each hostname and its purpose. An entry called app or old-shop can otherwise remain long after the person who created it has left the business.

Common questions about costs and email

Do I pay NameUK another annual registration for shop.example.co.uk? An ordinary subdomain under your registered domain does not need a second domain registration. The service you connect can still charge for hosting or a custom address. Does a subdomain create a mailbox? No. Email addresses and routing must be configured with your email provider.

Can I register a second domain and forward it to the first website? You can arrange a redirect through a suitable web or forwarding service. A DNS record by itself does not perform a web redirect. Check HTTPS and the destination address if using forwarding.

If a second domain suits your project, compare future renewal prices before committing. NameUK’s current UK offer below shows both registration and annual renewal, helping you budget beyond launch. If one main domain and a subdomain meet the need, avoid adding an unnecessary recurring registration.
