The quick answer

Consider .org.uk for a not-for-profit group with a UK focus, or .org for a community with a wider reach. Neither ending certifies charitable status. Check the complete name, current registration rules, renewal costs and who is authorised to hold and manage the registration.

Before you begin

  • The group's purpose and intended audience
  • The authorised person or organisation holding the registration
  • A monitored account email and renewal owner
  • A handover plan when staff or volunteers change

Start with your group's purpose and reach

Nominet lists .org.uk for not-for-profit entities. It can fit a UK community group, club or organisation whose audience recognises the country ending. Public Interest Registry positions .org around organisations and communities worldwide. Compare the address with the name people already use for your group.

A group working mainly in one UK area may value a clear local identity. A project with contributors or members across countries may prefer an address without a country ending. A UK organisation can still choose .org; make its location and activities clear on the site.

An ending is not proof of charitable status

Do not treat either address as a certificate or approval badge. Your organisation's actual identity, purpose and registration details should be explained on the website. A visitor should be able to understand who is responsible for the site and how to contact them without drawing conclusions from the ending alone.

Check the current rules and registrant requirements for the address before purchase. Choosing .org.uk for a public-purpose project does not replace those checks. NameUK's catalogue does not offer restricted UK endings or document-heavy registration routes.

Compare the practical responsibilities

Check each exact name independently. A matching name may be available under one ending and already registered under the other. If you register both, decide what each will do and budget for both renewals. Owning two names does not reserve every similar spelling.

Keep control through a change of volunteers or staff

Before registering, agree who is authorised to hold the domain and who will manage it. Use accurate registrant details and an account the responsible people can maintain. Do not assume the web designer's login or a departing volunteer's personal inbox will remain accessible.

Keep a handover record of the registrar, DNS host, website host, email provider and next renewal deadline. Store recovery material in the organisation's approved secure process. Avoid sharing account passwords by ordinary email. In NameUK, a change of legal registrant is a separate reviewed process; changing the account's email address does not change legal ownership.

Plan the website and email separately

Registering the domain does not create a website, donation service or mailbox. Choose those services, then connect their exact records at the DNS host. Existing website and mail services may continue at their current hosts even if the registrar changes.

If your group already uses an address, plan the transition before publishing the new one. Check old links, printed materials and email recipients. Keep the old services running for the agreed handover period, and test both the website and mail after each planned change.

Choose for people first, then support search discovery

Google uses country domains as one audience signal and treats .org as generic. Choose the address that fits the group, then publish clear pages about its work, locations and contact details. Neither ending guarantees visibility in search.

Finish by recording the full address, renewal budget and responsible account holder. Once registration is confirmed, save the registrar's renewal date and check that notices reach someone who can act. Your signed-in dashboard provides live controls for your registered domains. Keep your own renewal reminder as well.
