A UK domain needs an active DNS service to connect websites and email, but you do not necessarily need a separate paid DNS subscription. New NameUK registrations use our managed nameservers and include dashboard DNS record management while that service is in use. Website hosting and mailboxes are separate. Specialist DNS features or a service you choose elsewhere may have their own charges.

Before you begin
- Check which DNS host will be authoritative.
- Confirm that record editing is included in your domain service.
- List the records your website and mail providers actually request.
- Keep website hosting and mailbox costs separate.
- Only pay for extra DNS features when you have a defined requirement.
1. Separate registration, DNS and hosting
Registration keeps the exact domain assigned to its registrant for its paid term. Authoritative DNS publishes the records that direct visitors and mail systems to the right services. Hosting stores and serves a website, while a mailbox service receives and stores email. One purchase may bundle some of these functions, but they remain different jobs.
The DNS architecture described in RFC 1034 delegates responsibility through nameservers. The practical buying question is therefore where your editable records will be published, not whether a website designer calls a package hosting. Ask for a clear list of what is included before adding another monthly bill.
2. What a new NameUK registration provides
New registrations use ns1.hostdomains.net through ns4.hostdomains.net for managed DNS. Your domain has its own dashboard page, where you can view records and use the available add, edit and delete controls. This lets you connect a separately chosen website or email provider without buying a second DNS subscription simply to enter its ordinary records.
This is NameUK’s own explanation of its service, not an independent provider comparison. The included controls do not mean every possible specialist DNS feature is available. For example, do not assume that buying a domain enables customer DNSSEC changes: those controls are not currently open in NameUK. Check any essential advanced requirement with support before buying.
3. A simple website-and-email example
Imagine a new studio buys one .co.uk, chooses a separate website builder and opens one mailbox subscription elsewhere. The website host supplies the records for its site, and the mail host supplies MX and any verification or authentication records. The studio can publish those through NameUK’s managed DNS without changing registrars.
The budget has a domain charge, a website-plan charge and an email-plan charge if those services are chosen. Included record editing is not a website or mailbox subscription. Entering MX records does not create a mailbox, and pointing a domain at a web host does not build a website. Keep the providers’ instructions with the domain inventory.

4. External nameservers change where records are edited
If you switch to a different provider’s nameservers, that DNS service becomes the place that publishes the active records. Editing an old zone at another host will not update the answers visitors use. Establish which nameservers are active before troubleshooting a record that appears not to work.
Before a nameserver switch, copy the complete existing website, mail and verification records to the receiving host and confirm they have been published. Keep the original service available through the change. You do not need to move nameservers just because a website host has supplied an A or CNAME record; ask whether a record-only connection is supported.
5. When separate paid DNS can be reasonable
A buyer may have requirements such as contracted support hours, specialised traffic routing, a particular integration or management across a large existing portfolio. In that situation, compare services against a written requirement and confirm the exact feature and plan. Avoid treating a premium label as evidence that the feature you need is included.
For a straightforward site and mailbox connection, first test whether the included record controls meet the supplied instructions. If they do, another subscription may add administration without solving a current problem. If they do not, get a concrete answer before checkout rather than assuming you can implement an unsupported feature later.
6. Compare renewal cost as well as DNS access
Register .co.uk for £9.99 for one year, with annual renewal currently £9.99. Or choose a new three-year .co.uk registration for £25.99. Check the selected name and term before payment. Future renewal prices can change.
Low initial registration is only part of the domain budget. Check the annual renewal and the conditions under which included DNS remains available. Keep the registration active and maintain the connected website and mail subscriptions you choose. A stopped website plan and an expired domain require different fixes.
NameUK publishes the domain registration and annual renewal amounts together. For a buyer who wants a standard UK address, record controls and freedom to choose website and email services, that is a useful basis for comparison. Any paid specialist service you add should be listed separately rather than hidden inside the domain renewal budget.

7. Your before-you-buy DNS checklist
Collect the provider instructions for the site and email you plan to use. Confirm that the required record types can be managed, decide whether you will keep the default nameservers, and identify who is responsible for changes. Use a reachable account email and protect the account with a strong password and available two-step security.
After registration, make a small, deliberate configuration change and check the published result before changing anything else. Allow for cached DNS answers and test the website or mail service itself. The aim is a working connection with a clear owner, not the largest possible collection of subscriptions.
