The quick answer

No. NameUK’s current £0 incoming transfer for an eligible .co.uk or .uk keeps the existing registration expiry; it does not include an extra year. Renewing is a separate action with its own quote and confirmed extended expiry. Compare the transfer charge and the later renewal amount together, and do not release a domain close to its deadline without an agreed plan.

Before you begin

  • Record the current expiry and the existing provider’s renewal deadline.
  • Confirm transfer eligibility and the exact receiving instructions.
  • Check whether the transfer includes a renewal or only a registrar change.
  • After completion, verify the unchanged expiry and connected services.
  • Arrange a separate renewal and check the extended date when required.

1. A free move is not a new registration term

A registrar transfer changes the provider managing an existing registration. A renewal extends the paid registration time. The two can be sold together by a provider, but they should never be assumed to be the same transaction. Look for the actual resulting expiry, rather than deciding from the word transfer alone.

For NameUK’s current eligible unsigned .co.uk and .uk incoming route, the transfer charge is £0 and the registration expiry is preserved. You keep the registration time already paid for, but the move itself adds no time. A completed transfer is therefore not evidence that your next renewal has been paid.

2. A worked transfer and renewal timeline

Suppose a fictional .co.uk expires on 30 June 2027. Its owner completes an eligible transfer to NameUK on 10 March 2027. The transfer does not turn its expiry into 10 March 2028 or 30 June 2028: it remains 30 June 2027. The move and the later renewal belong on separate lines in the owner’s records.

If a separate ordinary one-year renewal is then accepted and completed, the expected expiry extends from 30 June 2027 to 30 June 2028. Nominet’s renewal guidance describes moving expiry forward by the renewal period. This example illustrates the distinction; it is not a promise that a particular domain can be renewed through a specific checkout on that date.

3. Check deadlines before choosing the order of events

Find both the registry expiry and your existing provider’s customer renewal deadline. They can be different. Leave time for account recovery, registrant checks and receiving-provider preparation. A request that has started is not a completed move, and waiting for a transfer is not a way to extend an approaching deadline.

NameUK’s incoming checker applies its current status and time-to-expiry requirements to the actual domain. If it cannot accept the name, ask support and the current provider for a plan before changing the registrar tag. Do not keep retrying or alter the expiry information to force a request through. Renewing with the existing provider first may be the appropriate option in a time-sensitive case.

4. Prepare the receiving request before releasing the domain

Start from NameUK’s transfer page, sign in when requested and follow the eligibility and review steps. Keep the existing legal registrant accurate. Wait for the prepared request and receiving instructions before asking the old registrar to release the domain. A tag written in an article is not a substitute for the instructions attached to your own request.

Nominet documents registrar acceptance options that can affect how a tag change is received. That is why a change made at the old provider is not, on its own, proof of completion in the new account. Follow the original reference until the receiving account confirms the domain. Do not create multiple requests because one step takes time.

5. Keep DNS, website and email continuity separate

A free registration transfer does not move website files, import old messages or buy a new mailbox subscription. Confirm that the current DNS host will keep publishing your records after the registrar move. Keep nameservers and connected services as reviewed unless a separate, prepared DNS migration is required.

Check the website and email after completion, then review any old subscriptions before cancelling them. For signed DNS, ask about a supported plan first: NameUK’s self-service signed transfers and DNSSEC changes are not currently available. The ordinary unsigned route should not be used as a workaround for a signed domain.

6. Compare the right renewal and registration prices

Register .co.uk for £9.99 for one year, with annual renewal currently £9.99. Or choose a new three-year .co.uk registration for £25.99. Check the selected name and term before payment. Future renewal prices can change.

The initial three-year registration offer is for a new available name. It is not an included three-year extension for a domain arriving through the £0 transfer route. An existing domain needs its own renewal quote, selected additional term and completion check. Compare that amount with the current provider’s like-for-like renewal, not an unrelated introductory advert.

NameUK’s current UK registration and annual renewal prices are shown together so that a buyer can budget beyond the first payment. This is our own recommendation for people who want visible ongoing costs, standalone registration and dashboard domain controls. A free transfer alone is not enough reason to move if an essential service or supported domain status does not fit your needs.

7. Confirm the result and set the next reminder

After the transfer, check the exact domain, completed status, expiry and renewal deadline in the receiving dashboard. Compare the date with your before-transfer record. If a renewal was purchased separately, keep its order reference and verify the confirmed extended expiry as well. Ask support about an unresolved result before paying again.

NameUK currently offers one-time domain renewal; automatic renewal billing is not enabled. Keep an independent reminder and a reachable account email. Registry processes can change: Nominet has announced UK standardisation for 9 February 2027, so read current transfer instructions when you move. Your useful checklist remains the same: the right request, a working domain and a verified renewal date.
